Preds Rally to Beat Red Wings
Nine seconds. That’s all it took. Do you know how hard it is to accomplish something in nine seconds? That’s not enough time to unload the dishwasher, or order a pizza, or realize you forgot to do your taxes. It’s not even enough time to read this paragraph. OK, sure, that’s because I’m being wordy. But you get the point.
In nine seconds Monday night, the Wings went from the verge of a sweep to the verge of … well, I’m not exactly sure. They are not really in trouble yet, but they can see trouble from here.
The Wings were four minutes away from seeing who could say “we swear we’re not thinking about the second round” without winking. They led this first-round series over Nashville, 2-0, and they led Game 3 by a score of 3-2.
With 3:57 left, Ryan Suter tied it.
With 3:48 left, Jason Arnott fired the puck over Dominik Hasek’s shoulder to give Nashville its first lead of the series.
“I see very well the last one,” Hasek said. “Both goals you feel like you could maybe make the save.”
A few minutes later, the Predators sealed the win with an empty-net goal. This was Nashville’s chance to turn this into a series, instead of just a series of games. In nine seconds, they did just that. They also finally got a lift from their captain, Arnott, who was dreadful in the two games in Detroit.
The Wings do not sound terribly worried, but they are concerned about at least one thing. Earlier in the game, Nashville scored two goals barely two minutes apart. In Saturday’s game, the Predators scored two goals 11 seconds apart. Astute readers will notice a trend here, and Nick Lidstrom is nothing if not astute.
“When they get one goal on us, we have to bear down the next shift or two,” Lidstrom said.
